Sponsorship deal saves flight contest
The man-powered flight contest
The winner of the contest will receive 500 from the sponsors
The future of a popular event at the Guernsey Round Table Harbour Carnival has been secured.

The man-powered flight competition is one of the most eagerly-awaited events at the carnival, which celebrates its 28th year in 2003.

A new three-year sponsorship deal with Bristol and West International has now been signed to allow islanders to continue to try to fly off the esplanade once a year.

The competition takes off on 15 July and will see would-be aviators trying to achieve man-powered flight.

Magnificent spectacle

The organisation of the carnival is already well under way and Chris Coquelin, of the Guernsey Round Table, said the enthusiasm for the competition had made it a magnificent spectacle.

He said it attracted great publicity for Guernsey.

The winner of the man-powered flight event will now receive 500 in holiday vouchers, courtesy of the sponsors, while second and third place teams will be given a bottle of champagne.

The pilot of the most innovative and stylish flying machine will also receive a bottle of bubbly.

The carnival has a sporting theme this year, with events including the Louvre Trust Concept Rowing Challenge, the Leapfrog Ladies Dinghy Race and the Tug of War.
