The Foundation is entering a number of flowers in the show |
Jersey's Orchid Foundation is hopeful of winning a prize at this year's Chelsea Flower Show, which starts next week. In previous years Jersey Tourism and Agriculture has used the event as a showcase for local flora and produce.
But no States departments will be attending the event this time because funds are being deployed elsewhere.
But the Eric Young Foundation is sending plants to the show and curator Chris Purver is hopeful at least two plants stand a good chance of winning.
Backing considered
"I think there are two that are very strong contenders, we have a miltonia, common name is a pansy orchid, it is a very pure white," said Mr Purver.
"It is exceptional because there are few whites of that size, so we are hopeful that will do very well."
The Foundation is also entering a patheapedlam or slipper orchid.
Jill White from the Agriculture and Fisheries Department says backing was considered for the event, but then rejected.
"In the middle of last year, when this was all being discussed clearly there was signs then that there wasn't going to be a budget available, " she said.
"The flower growing industry was consulted and with the decline of cut flowers to the UK it was felt it wasn't appropriate to put funds towards Chelsea," she added.
