Housing 'qualies' could be axed
jersey generic
Many politicians said they wanted to see 'qualies' abolished
A residential permit scheme that will replace qualifications is being planned by Jersey's Housing Committee.

The States has already agreed to cut the housing qualification period - the time a person has to live on the island before being eligible for residency - from 17 to 16 years.

But Housing President, Deputy Terry Le Main, hopes policy and resources will soon introduce more changes.

He says if they do not, his committee will propose a residential permit system.

He said: "People coming to the island would be able to seek permission from the housing authority to reside anywhere in the island.

"The aim would be that we would welcome those we need to work on a permanent basis, and eventually get rid of the housing qualifications."
