Move to reduce politician numbers
States of Guernsey
Deputy Bisson says the current system is unfair
An attempt is being made to cut down the number of Guernsey's politicians.

The move to reform the system, which appears in the new billet published on Friday, will take the form of a petition to the States - known as a requete.

Seven politicians want the law to be changed to cut the number from 45 to 42.

Deputy Roy Bisson, who is leading the petition, says it aims to give all islanders an equal number of votes in a General Election and an equal number of representatives in the States.

Spam messages

If the requete succeeds, islanders would elect six Deputies in each of seven electoral districts.

Deputy Bisson says the current framework, in which some islanders have six votes, while others have seven, is unfair.

The requete, which must be signed by seven politicians, comes before the States at the end of this month.

The States will also consider taking steps to shield people in the Bailiwick from so-called spam messages.

At the June meeting the States will be asked by Advisory and Finance to implement an EU directive on privacy in electronic communications.

Among other things it regulates junk e-mails, telephone marketing and unwanted faxes.
