Board seeking partner for island
Lihou Island
The island was purchased by the Board some years ago
Guernsey's Board of Administration has said it is looking to attract a new partner to help in the running of Lihou Island.

Lihou Island is the most westerly point in the Channel Islands and is an important conservation area due to an abundance of bird and marine life.

The States purchased the Island in January 1995.

The Board said it is disappointed that the house on the island is not being used especially as the maintenance costs for the building have been climbing.

'Guaranteeing access'

And board of Administration vice-president, deputy Mike Best, denies it was a mistake for the board to buy the island.

"It's not been used as much as it was but I wouldn't say it has been falling into disrepair," said Mr Best.

"We spend something like 30,000 a year on it," he said.

"We spent 20,000 re-roofing it not long ago.

"Looking at the whole picture I don't think it was a mistake for them to buy the island.

"We are guaranteeing access for Guernsey people to the island."

He also denied that the island's future is a low priority for the board.

"Hopefully when the board discusses it in the next couple of months we will have some form of concrete plans," he said.
