The Alderney lifeboat was involved in the search |
A five-hour search for a diver missing in deep waters north east of Alderney has been called off. The diver was diving on a wreck in the channel when the alarm was raised at about 1300 BST.
It is believed the diver failed to surface after taking part in the deep-sea excursion.
The Alderney lifeboat the Roy Barker and the Channel Island Air Search were called out.
Cross-channel ferry Commodore Clipper also joined in the search, which was co-ordinated by French coastguards.
Alderney's Harbourmaster, Steve Shaw, said the search has now been called off and the lifeboat has returned to Alderney.
It is believed the man was part of a charter expedition diving with a Weymouth-based company.
