Clipper training in Hong Kong is due to start on 13 April |
At least four crew members joining the Jersey Clipper at the half-way stage of the round-the-world race are being advised to join later than they would traditionally. The crews of the eight clipper yachts taking part in the race, currently based in Hong Kong, are being briefed about the potential threat of a pneumonia type virus.
Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) has killed over 70 people worldwide, with major threats established in Hong Kong and the Guangdong province of China.
All present, clipper crew members are also to be given a full medical before they leave the former British colony on the next leg of the race.
The company running the race has issued guidelines for all those joining crews in Hong Kong, advising them not to arrive until 12 April, before training begins on the 13.
They are telling people supporting the crews to heed current health advice and not travel unless essential.
A spokesperson for the Jersey Clipper team said: "There is widespread advice on this and its seriousness. It is, of course, a concern to everyone here and for other visitors, or for those with family out in Asia."
