Crematorium closes for repairs
Jersey crematorium
The work at the crematorium is expected to take a month
Jersey's crematorium is to stop cremating bodies for up to a month while the work is carried out on the facilities.

The old cremators have been operating for about 40 years and need to be replaced.

Bodies of islanders who die while the crematorium is being rebuilt will be stored in the island's Chapel of Rest in the meantime.

It is thought the work could take a number of weeks because it is not known how much asbestos there is in the building.

Floor damage

However, estate manager Mike Le Fevre explained although cremations would not be carried out, services could still go ahead.

He said: "We're not closing the crematorium as such.

"The crematorium will still be available for services, but we will not be able to undertake any cremations during the period that we are removing the old cremators and replacing them."

It is hoped the work will only take about a month.

But Mr Le Fevre said they may also have to be replace the concrete floor because of heat damage.
