Big increase in imported heroin
Drugs and a syringe
Heroin was seized in 2002 with a street value of more than 1m
The amount of heroin imported into Guernsey has seen a major increase.

The rise has been detected by Guernsey Customs, which has published its figures for last year.

In 2002, the Department seized drugs with an estimated street value of more than 1m.

Customs officers found more than 620 grams of heroin being brought into the island last year, compared with just over 80 grams in 2001.

Rob Prow, from Guernsey Customs, said: "The increase in heroin seizures is of great concern to us.

Developing market

"There is now a developing market for heroin in Guernsey, albeit a small market.

"But we have had a very successful year. We have put a lot of people before courts.

"I think the drugs situation is getting worse, but we are far more on top of it than some other jurisdictions, particularly the big cities and towns in the UK.

"I think our problem is also a lesser one than on our sister island of Jersey."
