Cycling lobby welcomes strategy
Francis Paul
Mr Paul wants islanders to take up alternative forms of transport
Guernsey's cycling lobby is calling on the States to build on its decision to have an integrated transport strategy.

The Guernsey Bicycle Group (GBG) said the green light for the new strategy must be followed up by firm measures to reduce car use and encourage islanders to take up alternative forms of transport.

The GBG has been campaigning for years for an integrated traffic and transport policy.

GBG chairman Francis Paul said the States must act quickly now a start has been made.

Important step

Mr Paul says improving the bus service is a vital part of the strategy, but he believes the new vehicles in the Island Coachways fleet are too big for Guernsey's roads.

He said the Traffic Committee will have to look at making smaller roads one-way, with traffic calming measures, to cater for the new buses.

But Mr Paul said he believes the politicians have taken a very important step in the right direction.
