The bridge to link the Waterfront to St Helier would have cost 2.5m |
Plans to build a 2.5m bridge linking Jersey's Waterfront with the rest of St Helier are set to be scrapped. Following the results of a phone poll, the Waterfront Enterprise Board (WEB) has decided not to go ahead with proposals to build the bridge.
But the final decision will be taken by the island's Planning Committee.
A total of 56% of 1,000 people asked in an NOP poll were against the bridge, with 34% in favour.
Of those surveyed, 96% said they were aware of what was being proposed.
Poll commissioned
The poll was commissioned by WEB due to the amount of controversy surrounding the bridge proposal.
The Planning Committee first asked WEB to include a bridge in the Waterfront scheme in 2000.
Since then, there has been a consultation scheme which has cost 55,000.
WEB finance director Geoff Borman said it had been an interesting exercise.
He said it reflected the changing perceptions about States spending over the past three years.
He said WEB would now carry on with its original plans for the Waterfront.
