Telecoms giant could apply for licence
There could be further competition for the telecommunications business in Jersey.

The multinational company Cable & Wireless (C&W) has announced it is considering applying for a licence to operate in the island.

C&W took over Guernsey Telecoms last year.

The company has now been in discussions with Jersey's Competition and Regulatory Authority (JCRA), which is the body responsible for licensing companies who want to operate telecommunications in the island.

Consultation period

The JCRA's executive director Charles Latham said if C&W came to the island it would provide more competition in the market, which currently includes Jersey Telecoms and Newtel Solutions.

It hopes to offer a variety of services, including a mobile phone network.

If C&W does apply for a licence there will be a period of consultation before any decision is made.
