The German Underground Hospital is now the Jersey War Tunnels
Thousands of rare documents and photographs of the Occupation of Jersey will be on display in a new research centre at the Jersey War Tunnels.

The collection, which goes on display at what formerly known as the German Underground Hospital, includes many unseen letters and books, and 5,000 photographs.

The collection, totalling many thousands of pieces, was donated by two private individuals, one of whom was Richard Maine, the previous curator of St Peter's Bunker.

Collections Manager Christopher Addy said obtaining this unique material, which has never been seen by the public, is a monumental event in Jersey's cultural history.

Unique history

He said: "I think it should be understood very clearly that it is an absolutely unique piece of British history, as the Channel Islands where the only part of the British Isles to be occupied.

"So, exhibitions to the purpose of bringing people into touch to the experiences of normal people during the Occupation is a very useful, informative and educational thing."

The public can visit the collection from Monday, 24 March.
