New proposals for key worker homes are being considered |
Housing licences for public sector workers employed in Guernsey have increased. The latest figures from the States' Housing Authority reveal essential licences have increased by 73 to 1,079 in 2002.
The majority of the extra licences have been issued for employment in health, education and the general public sector, which includes the police force.
As the total of licences only increased by 73, it means 157 essential licence holders relinquished their licences, which is confirmation the Housing Authority is limiting residence to five years wherever possible.
Of the 230 essential licences issued during the year, 82% were for five years or less.
The President of the Housing Authority, Deputy Bernard Flouquet, said the authority intends to report to the States with new proposals for the provision of "key worker" accommodation, taking into account the upward trend.
He said with the difficulty in recruiting and retaining staff, especially in the public sector, the increase in essential licences has been inevitable.
