Police have welcomed the move |
Jersey police are working on new measures that will help them strip criminals of the profits of their crimes. Their powers are similar to those already being used by the Assets Recovery Agency in the UK.
It tracks people who lead expensive lifestyles without visible funding and can seize their property and possessions.
Detective Sergeant Nick Troy of Jersey's Financial Crimes Unit welcomed the move.
He said: "This would be a hugely important tool in our armoury for investigation of crime at all levels.
"Criminals commit crime for financial gain at all levels, and this will give us the power to target those assets and their wealth, sometimes considerably.
"We won't have to rely on a conviction to target those assets if these measures are brought in, we can go down other roads such as civil recovery and taxation, and that's certainly going to hurt the criminal."
