Cash call to churchgoers

Churches are being asked to fork out 1,000 each
Members of the Church of England are being asked to pay more for the work of the Dean of Jersey.

Churchgoers may have to provide up to a quarter of his annual expenses, if new funding proposals are agreed.

The Very Reverend John Seaford incurs expenses of around 4,500 a year whilst fulfilling his duties as the head of the Anglican Church on the island.

In the past the bill has been met in full by a local charity the Madeleine Trust.

Details request

Now the trustees feel the present low returns on their investments make it impossible for them to pay the bill in full.

They are calling on all Anglican churches in the deanery to pay a contribution of about 1,000 annually between them.

However, two rectors, David Jones in St Mary and Lawrence Turner in St Martin, are calling for more details to be provided before churchgoers are asked to put their hands in their pockets.

The issue will be debated by the Jersey Deanery Synod next month.
