Domestic violence figures cause concern
Domestic violence victim posed by a model
Domestic violence accounted for 30% of recorded serious assaults
New figures from the police show there are 10 times more assaults in the home than on Jersey's streets.

Domestic violence now accounts for 30% of all recorded serious assaults in the island.

The annual police report reveals there were nearly 700 reported cases last year.

Jersey Police have a policy of arresting anyone accused of being violent in the home and taking them in for questioning.

A police spokesman said this pro-active approach had been welcomed by people.

Helped victims

"It has taken the decision away from the victim," he said.

"When the perpetrator is being questioned, they will be told the police are making the complaint on behalf of the victim.

"That has really helped the victims.

"They have said that even the process of the perpetrator being locked up at the police station and being interviewed has had some effect and that can only be a good thing."

Proved successful

Maritia Carter, from the Women's Refuge, said the pro-active approach by the police was a step towards reducing the island's problem with domestic violence.

"There is a long way to go. It takes a long time for attitudes to change," she said.

"But you have to start somewhere and I think that policy is a good one.

"It has proved to be successful in other parts of the world, so there is no reason why it can't be successful in Jersey."
