Disabled groups in Britain have called for the resignation of the England football manager, Glenn Hoddle, after controversial comments he's reported to have made about disabled people.

Hoddle is quoted by The Times newspaper as saying that people born with disabilities may be paying for sins committed in a previous life.

He's accused the Times of a scandalous and disgraceful interpretation of his comments.

The English Football Association gave him its backing, saying he was an excellent supporter of disabled sportspeople.

It's not the first time the England manager's spiritual beliefs have provoked controversy.

Last year he was criticised over his use of a faith healer for the England team in the run-up to the World Cup.
