| Sunday, 5 January, 2003, 09:37 GMT Lithuania votes for president The people of Lithuania are voting in a run-off presidential election. They will chose between the incumbent President Valdas Adamkus and a former prime minister, Rolandas Paksas. Mr Adamkus won 35% of the vote in the first round and his opponent, nearly 20%. Mr Adamkus, a former United States citizen, has secured invitations for his country to join Nato and the European Union. Mr Paksas won recognition when he was mayor of the capital, Vilnus, for reviving the city's historic centre,which had fallen into disrepair under Soviet rule.
