| Friday, 18 October, 2002, 18:09 GMT 19:09 UK Nobel author chides Hungary over past The winner of this year's Nobel Prize for literature, the Hungarian novelist Imre Kertesz, has criticised his country for not facing up to its role in the systematic murder of Hungarian Jews in the Holocaust. Mr Kertesz is visiting Budapest for the first time since winning the prize last week. The author said he was touched by the outpouring of love he has received during his visit. However, he criticised the government's decision to distribute to every school a free copy of his book Fateless, which is based on his experiences in the Auschwitz concentration camp. Mr Kertesz said he disliked compulsory reading lists.
