Slovak president taken to hospital
Slovak President Rudolf Schuster, has been admitted to hospital in Bratislava after medical checks revealed signs of possible food poisoning.

President Schuster, who is 68, had already been taken ill with sunstroke suffered while attending Sunday Mass celebrated by Pope John Paul II in Krakow in Poland.

According to a Slovak government spokesman Jan Fuelle, the president was taken to hospital on Thursday evening after his condition deteriorated.

The spokesman said Mr Schuster was not in a critical state.

Blood tests had revealed toxic substances in his blood, and his liver appeared to have been affected, but so far doctors have been unable to determine the exact cause of the illness.

The spokesman said doctors had almost ruled out the possibility the president had been poisoned by mushrooms.
