When Jacques Chirac launched his campaign on Monday, he said it was his passion for France which had persuaded him to stand for his fourth presidential race in a row. His socialist opponents counter, of course, that the real reason is his passion for power. But in a country where relations between the sexes are not as enlightened as many would like to think, there has been some discussion about the other side of the passion debate. Just how passionate do French women feel about the various, generally male, presidential candidates on offer? Lionel's looks According to a Valentine's Day survey in the Liberation newspaper, the choice seems pretty clear between the more seductive ladies' man, Jacques Chirac, and the shier, less obviously attractive Lionel Jospin.
He is described by the editor of the women's magazine Young and Beautiful as the "epitome of un-sexy" while another female journalist says he is "not someone you can imagine having wild nights of passion with". But perhaps Mr Jospin shouldn't be too disheartened. Not only did he actually get more female votes than Mr Chirac at the last election seven years ago, but - according to the French editor of Elle magazine, Gallic women find a president with impressive polices rather more important than a president with impressive looks. And, as one of the female journalists wonders, can anyone who went to the elite ENA university - as both Jospin and Chirac did - possibly be good looking as well. | See also: Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top Europe stories now: Links to more Europe stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||
