Traudl Junge, 81, who was one of the last surviving members of Hitler's inner circle, died of cancer on Sunday night in a Munich clinic. A documentary about her life was shown for the first time at the Berlin film festival on Sunday. One of the film's directors announced her death after the final festival screening on Tuesday. Silent witness Junge had refused to speak about her life as Hitler's secretary until she knew that she did not have long to live.
She also says that she never heard the Jews discussed, saying she had only learned of the Holocaust after the war. Her comments have been rejected by the Simon Wiesenthal Center as "sheer fantasy". Junge also released a book shortly before her death entitled, To the final hour. In that she describes how she withdrew to Hitler's bunker as the Soviet army advanced on Berlin. Junge took down his final will and testament two days before he and his lover Eva Braun committed suicide. | See also: Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top Europe stories now: Links to more Europe stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||
