 | | Friday, 12 October, 2001, 09:16 GMT 10:16 UK The Nobel Peace Prize  The United Nations and its Secretary-General Kofi Annan have been awarded the centenary Nobel Peace Prize. BBC News Online looks back a quarter of a century at some previous prize-winners. The BBC's Asia Correspondent Matt Frei reports on the negotiations with North Korea which landed South Korean President Kim Dae-jung the 2000 Nobel Peace Prize. He follows the organisation Medecins Sans Frontieres (Doctors without Borders) which received the award last year for its work in war and famine zones around the world. 1998

The year of the three-way split, when Palestinian leader, Yasser Arafat, Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin and his Foreign Minister, Shimon Peres, were awarded the prize for their attempts to bring about peace in the Middle East. 1993
The citation spoke of the 'personal integrity and great political courage' of both men, when the leader of the African National Congress, Nelson Mandela, and South Africa's president, FW de Klerk, shared the award. 1991
Aung San Suu Kyi, Burmese opposition leader and human rights campaigner, was under house arrest when she received the accolade for her democratic political activities. Nearly 10 years on, it is reported that she is being detained in her home again. 1983
As a mark of respect for imprisoned trade union members, the founder of the Solidarity trade union, Lech Walesa, stayed in Poland rather than collect his award during the Nobel ceremony. 1979
Mother Teresa, leader of the Order of the Missionaries of Charity in India, received the Prize for her work among the poor and sick of Calcutta - work which she described as 'a gift'. 1975
Andrei Sakharov, pictured with his wife, Yelena, was another recipient who was unable to collect his award. The Russian nuclear physicist was a leading human rights campaigner in the Soviet Union.
