 | | Monday, 27 August, 2001, 00:24 GMT 01:24 UK Human remains may be Carlos ally  A five-year-old spotted the remains on a beach Greek authorities are to carry out DNA testing on the remains of a human corpse to establish if it is that of Bruno Bregeut, the Swiss accomplice of terrorist Carlos the Jackal. Breguet, one of the closest known associates of Ilich Ramirez Sanchez - otherwise known as Carlos, went missing about five years ago in his mid-forties. He had been living in Greece at the time of his disappearance. Forensic tests have shown that the remains found in the coastal village of Drepanon were those of a middle-aged man. Encased in cement The remains were spotted by a five-year-old boy playing on a beach. The lower limbs were in cement beneath rocks, and other body parts were found scattered nearby.
His family has always maintained that Breuget had been murdered. The Swissman served seven years in an Israeli jail in the 1970s for smuggling explosives. He was arrested in 1982 along with the wife of Carlos, Magdalena Kopp, for possession of explosives, and released in 1985. Jackal confidante The Venezuelan-born Carlos, of deep Communist conviction, gained international notoriety as a mastermind of deadly bombings, assassinations and hostage-takings. He was snatched in Sudan in 1994 and is now serving a life sentence in Paris for the murder of two French security agents and a Lebanese informer. He established his reputation in 1975 when he took 70 people hostage at a meeting in Vienna of ministers from the oil cartel Opec, the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries. Three people were killed as he and the terrorists stormed into the building firing machine guns. Tests Greek authorities are to run the tests on the remains this week. If the samples do not match up, police are expected to examine links to the mafia or drug-trafficking.
