Slobodan Milosevic's position as strongman of the Balkans was once seen as impregnable  He became a figurehead for the Serb nationalist movement in the late 1980s  Milosevic positioned himself as a champion of Serb rights, winning him widespread popular support in his country  He was once seen as a man the West could do business with  But Nato responded in force to Milosevic's deployment of troops to quell an ethnic Albanian uprising in Kosovo  A year later, public opposition and anger reached a peak after Milosevic tried and failed to rig elections  Days of protests culminated in the storming of the Serb parliament in October last year, and Mr Milosevic was ousted  Milosevic was arrested and detained in a bloody raid on his Belgrade residence in April  Stripped of his power, he now goes on trial accused of war crimes | |
