EU leaders gather in Europe for the Gothenburg summit
Expanding the European Union was high on the agenda as Europe's leaders met in Gothenburg for the final summit of Sweden's EU presidency. Plans to increase the number of member countries from 15 to 27 were thrown into disarray following Ireland's vote to reject the Nice Treaty. But the whole meeting was overshadowed by violent protests.

Demonstrators battle heavily outnumbered police in Gothenburg, Sweden, as European Union leaders are holding their summit. One demonstrator was shot and wounded by a police officer who was being attacked. Two other people were admitted to hospital with gunshot wounds.

Ireland votes to reject the Nice Treaty on 7 June, throwing the EU's enlargement plans into chaos. But European Union leaders vow to push ahead with plans to admit 12 new - mostly East European states - into the union. The BBC's Justin Webb went to County Wicklow to find out why the Irish voted no.
