Trouble flared in Gothenburg

Demonstrators battle heavily outnumbered police in Gothenburg, Sweden, as European Union leaders are holding their summit. One demonstrator was shot and wounded by a police officer who was being attacked. Two other people were admitted to hospital with gunshot wounds.

On the eve of the summit, more than 200 people are arrested as environmentalists and anti-globalisation activists clash with police in Gothenburg after US and European leaders fail to resolve their disagreement over the Kyoto protocol on global warming.

Irish voters rejected the treaty in a referendum

Ireland votes to reject the Nice Treaty on 7 June, throwing the EU's enlargement plans into chaos. But European Union leaders vow to push ahead with plans to admit 12 new - mostly East European states - into the union. The BBC's Justin Webb went to County Wicklow to find out why the Irish voted no.
