| Thursday, 19 April, 2001, 16:33 GMT 17:33 UK BP faces new demands on environment Shareholders of one of the world's largest oil companies, BP-Amoco, heard demands for more action on environmental and human rights issues at their annual meeting in London today. Two resolutions critical of the company's management have received about eight per cent of shareholders votes counted so far. One motion called on BP to sell its stake in PetroChina, an offshoot of the Chinese national oil company. PetroChina is involved in a pipeline project that has raised human rights concerns in Tibet. A small group of demonstrators carried a Tibetan flag outside the meeting. A second resolution demanded that BP-Amoco did more to combat global warming by setting out a timetable for moving away from the extraction of fossil fuels that emit large amounts carbon dioxide.
