| Friday, 15 December, 2000, 18:54 GMT Chernobyl closes, but the suffering continues The Chernobyl nuclear power station in Ukraine -- scene of the world's worst nuclear accident - has been shut down for the last time. Thousands of people died from radiation following the explosion at Chernobyl fourteen years ago, and the health of millions of others was affected. Mourners gathered at Kiev's main cathedral to remember the dead. A BBC correspondent in Ukraine says it will take eight years to completely decommission the plant, but the suffering of more than three million adults and children affected by the radiation will continue. Our correspondent says there are fears that they will now be ignored as attention focusses on other plants Ukraine is currently building. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
