Mercury winner Badly Drawn Boy and Manchester newcomers Doves are also doing well, with two nominations, both for best album and best new act.

As well as Travis, Stereophonics, the Manic Street Preachers, Blur and Radiohead will fight it out for the best act in the world prize.

The monthly magazine's awards are decided by the public, who this year can vote by Wap phone in a tie-up with a mobile phone network.

The ceremony, which will be hosted by Davina McCall, will take place on 31 October at the Park Lane Hotel in London.

Guests at the event will include club acts Moloko and the Chemical Brothers, rock bands Toploader and Muse and garage duo Artful Dodger.

The ceremony will be preceded by three special gigs in London. They feature Orbital's only UK date this year at the Hammersmith Palais (26 October), and The Clash's Joe Strummer playing the 100 Club in Oxford Street on 27 October.

It will be the first time Strummer has played the once-legendary punk venue in 24 years.

Irish band JJ72 complete the series of shows, with a concert at the tiny Dublin Castle venue in Camden on 29 October.

Last year's awards saw Blur named best band in the world, while the Chemical Brothers took best album for Surrender.
