Frasier stars take on Dibley
Vicar of Dibley
All smiles: The Vicar of Dibley is to cross the Atlantic
Frasier stars Jane Leeves and Peri Gilpin are to develop a US version of the BBC sitcom The Vicar of Dibley, which stars Dawn French.

The sitcom was created by Four Weddings and a Funeral writer Richard Curtis and revolves around a comely vicar in a quiet rural parish.

Bristol Cities, the company set up by Leeves - who plays Daphne in Frasier - and Gilpin (Ros), bought the format from the sitcom's UK producer Tiger Aspect.

There are no plans for Leeves or Gilpin to star in the show, which is expected to be screened on a major US network.

Tiger Aspect has also sold the format to Playing the Field, a BBC drama about a woman's football team, to Whoopie Goldberg's One Ho Productions, and US entertainment guru Dick Clark has optioned Streetmate, presented by Davina McCall in the UK.

A statement from Tiger Aspect said that Dibley writer Richard Curtis was "delighted that Bristol Cities are to remake the BBC One favourite and keen to see who will be cast in the lead role so brilliantly played for the UK by Dawn French".

Tiger Aspect's commercial director Andrew Zein said: "These are great partnerships - some of the best and most loved UK programme formats with some of the best production talent in the US."
