Clapton guitars fetch 60,000
Eric Clapton
Clapton and a collection of his valuable guitars
Two classic guitars played by rock star Eric Clapton have been sold by a London auctioneer for a total of nearly 60,000.

A 1958 Gibson guitar, bought by Clapton in 1968, was snapped up at the Christie's sale by an American collector for 47,000.

The money raised from the sale of the guitar will go to the Isabel Hospice charity, in memory of blues guitarist Paul Kossoff.

A second guitar owned by the blues guitarist, a 1952 Gibson Le Paul which he was lent for a show 1997 London concert, sold for 12,925.

But the sales fell short of the world record price of 313,000 his guitar Brownie fetched last year.

A contract signed between punk legends the Sex Pistols and A&M recordings outside Buckingham Palace, and on the eve of the release of the single God Save the Queen, fetched between 3,525.

Three "very rare musicians receipts" for The Beatles' performances at the Top Ten Club, Hamburg, during a 13-week tour in 1961 were all sold, bringing in between 12,925 and 15,275 each.

The receipts are signed by the band members, including Stuart Sutcliffe and guitarist Tony Sheridan, and show they were paid DM245 for the tour.

The auction failed to reach the estimated target, but with 89% of lots sold, raised 311,540.

A rare draft of working lyrics written by Jimi Hendrix for the song Crosstown Traffic, which was expected to fetch up to 25,000, failed to reach the minimum reserve price, and remained unsold.

The lyrics comprise 32 lines written on two lined, yellow pages.

Lyrics for the song Absolutely Sweet Marie, written by Bob Dylan in 1966, also failed to sell.
