Owen has already appeared in the BBC's Hero To Zero

A spokesman for Owen, 20, said: "A script has been sent to our office but no decision has yet been made."

The film also stars Robert Carlyle, of The Full Monty and Trainspotting fame. It is not clear whether Owen, who lives in north Wales, is being offered a speaking part or a cameo role.

Owen has already taken a television part, playing himself in BBC children's drama Hero To Zero, and has appeared in crisp commercials.

His former England strike partner, Alan Shearer, took a part two years ago in The Match, alongside Richard E Grant and Max Beesley.

Former Welsh international Vinnie Jones is carving out a film career for himself in Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and the recently-released Snatch, while Frenchman Eric Cantona has appeared in three films since retiring from Manchester United.
