Lily Allen kicked off the Earls Court ceremony with her song The Fear. She was named best British female - her first Brit Award. The star donned an orange wig saying she had not expected to win and did not want the cameras to find her.
X Factor runners-up JLS took home two awards: best British breakthrough act and best British single for Beat Again.
Mel B and Geri Hallliwell picked up the prize for best Brits moment of the last 30 years on behalf of the Spice Girls. Their 1997 performance, featuring Halliwell's Union Jack dress, was honoured.
Florence Welch performed with Dizzee Rascal. Both performers walked away with an award each and the rapper told the crowd "it was about time" he won a trophy.
A performance by Jay-Z and Alicia Keys was one of the highlights of the night. The duo sang Empire State Of Mind.
The venue was full to bursting with famous faces such as Kylie Minogue, Fearne Cotton and Alexandra Burke.
Robbie Williams received the honorary award for outstanding contribution to music, and performed a medley of his greatest hits.
Kasabian took home the award for best British group. The band performed their hit single Fire.
Comedian Peter Kay hosted the show, putting the stars in their place with a series of witty one-liners, which included describing Lady Gaga as "New York's answer to Su Pollard".
