"I can confirm that we are in the early stages of developing a film which would be a celebration of the Queen Mother's life," the spokesman said.

"No script has been commissioned yet, and it's obviously not cast yet, but we are hopeful it will go ahead, probably as a two-hour film."

Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother took to the throne with her husband George VI following Edward VIII's abdication.

Upon George's death in 1952, the dowager queen stepped down to be replaced by Elizabeth II, her eldest daughter.

The Queen Mother celebrates her 100th birthday on 4 August, but the celebrations have already begun in earnest.

Last week, four generations of the Royal Family gathered for a service of thanksgiving at St Paul's Cathedral and on Wednesday ITV is to broadcast live coverage of her birthday pageant from London's Horse Guard Parade.

ITV has also unveiled plans to televise an unauthorised documentary portrait of the Queen by controversial biographer Andrew Morton later this year.

Morton, who wrote Diana: Her True Story, has interviewed more than 200 different sources for the one-hour programme.
