Indie film honour for Day-Lewis

Day-Lewis won Oscars for My Left Foot and There Will Be Blood

Daniel Day-Lewis is to be honoured at this year's British Independent Film Awards it has been announced.

The 52-year-old Oscar-winning actor will receive the Richard Harris Award for his outstanding contribution to British film.

Essex drama Fish Tank scored the most nominations with eight nods, followed by Sam Rockwell sci-fi Moon with seven.

Winners will be announced at a ceremony hosted by actor James Nesbitt on 6 December in London.

Fish Tank received nominations including best film, screenplay and best director for Andrea Arnold.

Most promising

Its star, 18-year-old Katie Jarvis, also received two acting nods in the best actress and most promising newcomer categories for her role as 15-year-old Mia, a girl who finds her life turned inside out when her mother brings home a new boyfriend.

Duncan Jones was another two-time nominee with mentions for best director and the Douglas Hickox Award for best debut director for Moon, while Rockwell was also nominated for his role as the astronaut working alone in space.

Emily Blunt is nominated for best actress for her role in Young Victoria

Coming-of-age drama An Education, Armando Iannucci's Westminster satire In The Loop and Nowhere Boy, a chronicle of Beatle John Lennon's childhood, are all nominated for six awards each.

In the best actress category, Emily Blunt is nominated for her role in Young Victoria and will compete against Jarvis, Abbie Cornish for Bright Star, Carey Mulligan for An Education and Sophie Okonedo for Skin.

While Bronson's Tom Hardy is up against Rockwell, Aaron Johnson for Nowhere Boy, Andy Serkis for Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll and Peter Capaldi for In The Loop.

This year's jury includes The Wire star Idris Elba, Irish actor Liam Cunningham and Brick Lane director Sarah Gavron.
