Quaid, 46, cited irreconcilable differences as grounds for bringing a conclusion to the couple's nine-year marriage. He has requested joint custody of their eight-year-old son, Jack, according to records at Los Angeles Supreme Court.
The split between 38-year-old Ryan - one of Hollywood's most popular stars - and Big Easy star Quaid took place eight weeks ago. Their break-up, which was described as "mutual and amicable", was made public on 28 June. Ryan, who has been in the UK filming Proof of Life, fuelled tabloid gossip when she was seen out in London with her co-star Russell Crowe. Following the divorce announcement, Ryan's publicist denied a "third-party" was the reason for Quaid's request. Out of sync Quaid and Ryan married on Valentine's Day in 1991 but had met four years earlier on the set of Joe Dante's 1987 comedy adventure Innerspace. They worked together again in 1993 in the movie Flesh and Bone. As star of hit films such as When Harry Met Sally, Sleepless in Seattle and You've Got Mail, Ryan has become one of Hollywood's biggest romantic comedy actresses.
In comparison, Quaid's career has appeared to flag and lose direction. Early success as the star of films like the Big Easy and Great Balls of Fire, has been followed by long periods in which he has been side-lined to bit parts. Recently, however, there have been signs that Quaid's career could be once again on the up. He is currently starring in the fantasy thriller Frequency and will next be seen in Traffic followed by Stranger than the Wheel. |
