Chris Evans presented the Radio 1 breakfast show for two years

Broadcaster Chris Evans says he "acted like a spoilt child" when he presented BBC Radio 1's breakfast show.

During his two years on the show, Evans was often late for work and sometimes failed to turn up. He left in 1997.

"I knew that for the first time in my career I had really messed up. I should have known better," Evans, 43, said.

He is taking over the Radio 2 breakfast show from Sir Terry Wogan next year and made the comments in his autobiography, being serialised in the Mail On Sunday.

'Absolute carnage'

The star described his behaviour while on Radio 1 as "outrageous" and "delusional" and added he had "lost all perspective".

Evans, who currently hosts the Radio 2 drivetime slot, admitted his team deliberately did not turn up for work once after a Christmas party.

"There was no doubt about it, I was beginning to display the first signs of pottiness."

"As a result of my 'resignation' I had caused absolute carnage, lost much of the respect I had worked so hard to build up over the years, as well as a whacking great pay cheque in the process.

"And the worst thing of all? I had acted like a spoilt child.

"I was dying because I knew that for the first time in my career I had really messed up. I should have known better."

Evans became a household name in 1992, when he became host of Channel 4's early morning programme The Big Breakfast.

In 2008 the DJ married for the third time.

His wife, professional golfer and model Natasha Shishmanian, gave birth to their son, Noah, earlier this year.
