Final Destination tops film chart

3D horror movie Final Destination has gone straight to the top of the North American box office chart.

The film made an estimated $28.3m in its opening weekend according to early figures.

Quentin Tarantino's war-time film Inglourious Basterds dropped to number two in its second week on the chart.

Halloween II was a new entry at number three, with sci-fi film District 9, produced by Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson, in fourth spot.

District 9 tells the story of an extra-terrestrial race living on earth.

GI Joe: The Rise of the Cobra lies in fifth place.

GI Joe, based on the US version of the toy figure Action Man, stars Dennis Quaid and Sienna Miller.

Julia & Julia, featuring Meryl Streep in one of the lead roles, dropped from fifth to sixth place, followed by The Time Traveller's Wife at seven and comedy Shorts at number eight.

There was another new entry at nine - Taking Woodstock, based on the story of how the famous Woodstock festival of 1969 came about. The film is directed by Ang Lee.

Family comedy G-Force is at number 10, down from last week's seventh spot.
