Michael Jackson's remains will be buried in Los Angeles on what would have been his 51st birthday, the late singer's family have confirmed.

He will be laid to rest at the Forest-Lawn memorial park in Glendale on 29 August in a private ceremony for close friends and family.

A spokesman for the Jacksons said they wished to convey their gratitude for the support offered by fans.

The cause of Jackson's death, on 25 June, has yet to be revealed.

Family spokesman Ken Sunshine said Jackson would be buried on the Holly Terrace at the memorial park's Great Mausoleum, which features replicas of Michelangelo works.

Block party

A different Forest Lawn cemetery in Los Angeles provided the setting for the memorial service held by the family in the hours leading up to the globally televised tribute concert on 7 July.

His coffin was taken to the concert and remained on stage while family members and celebrities paid tribute to the star.

There has been continuing speculation as to where he would eventually be buried.

"The Jackson family once again wishes to express its gratitude to Michael's fans around the world for their support during these difficult times," the family said in a statement.

Meanwhile, director Spike Lee has announced plans for a "block party" to celebrate Jackson's life in the New York borough of Brooklyn.

Lee worked with Jackson on the music video for They Don't Care About Us.
