Film director and writer John Hughes, who has died at the age of 59, made some of the most successful comedy films of the 1980s and 1990s. THE BREAKFAST CLUB (1985) Plot summary: Five high school students - all with very different interests - spend a Saturday together in detention. She creates situations which help boost their confidence before leaving, appearing at the end of the film as an unlikely high school gym teacher to a group of stunned boys. Her best pal Duckie harbours feelings for her, but remains loyal until the end. HOME ALONE (1990) Plot summary: It is chaos in the McAllister household as the family prepare to travel to Paris to celebrate Christmas. A family argument causes eight-year-old Kevin to storm off and spend the night in a part of the house he never sleeps in. After accidentally leaving without him, Kevin wakes the next morning to find his family are nowhere to be found. Believing he has made them disappear, Kevin revels in no longer having to answer to anyone, until a pair of burglars attempt to rob his house, and he sets out to defend his home.
