Beatles poster sells for $50,000

The 1967 poster came from the Beatles Fan Club of Great Britain

A Sgt Pepper souvenir poster bearing the signatures of all four Beatles has sold for $52,500 (£31,720) at a pop memorabilia auction in New York.

Among an array of 300 musical items that went under the hammer were a set of Bob Dylan's handwritten lyrics, which made $25,000 (£15,090).

A bass guitar owned by late Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain was snapped up for $43,750 (£26,415).

In total, the auction fetched more than $650,000 (£392,200), said Christie's.

Nostalgia

Around 70% of the lots were sold, it added.

Simeon Lipman, the auction house's head of popular culture, said that the high prices were driven by nostalgia.

"Even in an unstable economy, you'll see peaks for certain prices," he added.

Other items of musical history that were sold off included a book of handwritten lyrics by late AC/DC frontman Bon Scott, dating from the late 1970s.

The Dylan notes, scribbled in his own hand, were for the song With God On Our Side.

Screen memorabilia also featured in the auction, with Johnny Depp's pivotal prop from the film Edward Scissorhands making $16,250 (£9,795).

Actor Bob Crane's Leather Jacket from the 1960s US television series Hogan's Heroes fetched $40,000 (£24,120) - twice its estimated price.

A script from The Godfather signed by late screen icon Marlon Brando was also in the auction, and sold for $10,625 (£6,404).
