Up flies to top of US box office

Up tells the tale of old man who makes his house airborne

Animated comedy Up has topped the North American box office, taking $68.2m (£41.9m) on its opening weekend, early figures show.

The Pixar film, about a grumpy old man and a scout who fly to South America in a flying house, knocked Night at the Museum 2 off the top spot.

Horror movie Drag Me to Hell opened at number three with $16.6m (£10.2m).

Terminator Salvation, starring Christian Bale, was at number four followed by Star Trek at five.

Star Trek took $12.8m (£7.8m) over the weekend which meant it overtook Monsters vs Aliens as the year's highest-grossing movie in the US so far.

The film has now taken $209.5m (£127.8m), making it the first film to take more than $200m (£122m) this year.

Angels and Demons dropped from number four to number six while comedy spoof Dance Flick fell from number five to number seven.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine, which took $87m (£53.1m) on its opening weekend, took $3.9m (£2.4m) in eighth place.

Romantic comedy Ghosts of Girlfriends was in ninth place while the top 10 was rounded out by Obsessed, starring Beyonce Knowles.
