A 3D concert release by pop stars The Jonas Brothers has been kept off the top spot in the US box office chart by comic film Medea Goes To Jail.

The movie, which stars actor-director Tyler Perry as his female character Madea, made $16.5m (11.5m) to stay at number one for a second week.

The Jonas Brothers still captured the second biggest debut for a concert film after Disney stablemate Miley Cyrus.

Slumdog Millionaire climbed to number three after its triumph at the Oscars.

The Mumbai-based film has now made a total of $115 (80m) at the North American box office.

Its post-Academy Awards takings are the biggest of any best picture winner in the past decade, with attendances rising 45% since its triumph.

The other main new release of the week, Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li, made its debut at eight.

The movie is adapted from a popular video game.

Other films that remained in the top 10 included Liam Neeson thriller Taken at number four, while Confessions of a Shopaholic continued its downward slide to nine.

Paul Dergarabedian of Media By Numbers, which compiles box office statistics, said that Perry's feisty granny Madea had made a "huge mark".

"If you've got 'Tyler Perry' or Madea in the title, you've got a hit," he added.
