Tim Burton dreams of Cure project

The American director has collaborated extensively with composer Danny Elfman

Film director Tim Burton has said he would like to work on a future project with post-punk icons The Cure.

He was at the NME Awards in London on Wednesday to present the band with the gong for Godlike Genius.

"I could easily see really liking to do something, collaborate some time," said Burton, about his musical inspiration.

The ceremony took place at the Brixton Academy, which was transformed into a gothic wonderland with props from the film maestro's Sleepy Hollow set.

Speaking to BBC 6 Music, Burton said he was a huge fan of The Cure.

"I've been for so many years and they've been so inspirational to me, so it's a real honour to be here with them."

The visionary director is noted for his quirky, often dark films such as Edward Scissorhands, Batman Returns and Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street.

They are really such great people so I could easily see really liking to do something.

Burton cited The Cure as a key influence in his film-making.

"Their music has always been inspirational to me so somewhere, in anything I've done. Always in the back of my mind, it's probably rolling around there somewhere in my soul."

Meanwhile, Burton is working on his latest project - a 3-D version of Alice In Wonderland, based on Lewis Carroll's famous book.
