Twilight scares off rival movies

A sequel to Twilight is already planned

Teen vampire movie Twilight took the biggest bite out of the British and Irish box office over the weekend.

The film, about a girl who falls in love with a vampire, took �2.5m, pushing last week's number one, The Day The Earth Stood Still, to fourth place.

Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa remained second, with Four Christmases third and The Tale of Despereaux in fifth.

Classic Christmas movie It's A Wonderful Life, which has been reissued, reached number 12.

The 1947 film is about an angel called Clarence (Henry Travers) who visits frustrated businessman George Bailey, played by James Stewart.

By Christmas Eve George is suicidal after a bout of bad luck and Clarence shows him what life would have been like if he had never existed.

The black and white movie took �49,845, and came one place above new release Gonzo: The Life and Work Of.

A Bunch of Amateurs, starring Burt Reynolds, was the only other new release in the top 15, coming into the chart at number 11.

The comedy, about a sleazy Hollywood agent, took �91,156 in its first three days of opening.

Adventure fantasy Inkheart fell two places to number six this week.

Bollywood romance Rab Ne Bana De Jodi dropped down to seventh, while at number nine, James Bond film Quantum of Solace enjoyed its eighth week in the top 10.
