Two more acting nods for Winslet

Winslet last received a SAG nomination in 2007 for Little Children

British actress Kate Winslet has been shortlisted in two categories at the 2009 Screen Actors Guild (SAG) awards.

The 33-year-old is up for best actress for Revolutionary Road, with a second nomination in the supporting actress category for post-war drama The Reader.

The late Heath Ledger gets a supporting actor nod for his performance as the Joker in Batman movie The Dark Knight.

The awards - one of the key events in the run-up to the Oscars next February - will be held on 25 January.

Last week Winslet - a five-time Oscar nominee - was recognised for the same films in the Golden Globe nominations.

The Titanic actress received another two nominations from the London Film Critics' Circle on Thursday.

Comic turn

Danny Boyle's film Slumdog Millionaire is one of five movies up for the SAG best ensemble award - the guild's equivalent of a best picture prize.

Play adaptations Doubt and Frost/Nixon are also shortlisted, alongside the political biopic Milk and Brad Pitt fantasy The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.

Winslet's rivals in the best actress category include Meryl Streep for Doubt, Changeling's Angelina Jolie and the little-known Melissa Leo, star of indie drama Frozen River.

Pitt and Milk's Sean Penn are up for best film actor, as are Frank Langella for Frost/Nixon and The Wrestler's Mickey Rourke.

Slumdog star Dev Patel is recognised in the supporting actor category, as is Robert Downey Jr for his comic turn in Tropic Thunder.

In addition to Winslet, meanwhile, the supporting actress category includes Doubt co-stars Amy Adams and Viola Davis.

Ralph Fiennes and Tom Wilkinson are both up for the award for best male performance in a TV movie or miniseries.

Strategy

Tracey Ullman is recognised in the TV comedy actress category for her satirical show State of the Union, while Hugh Laurie gets a best dramatic actor nod for House.

This year's SAG awards saw British actors Daniel Day-Lewis and Julie Christie pick up prizes, with the Coen brothers' No Country For Old Men winning the best film ensemble gong.

Next year's ceremony, though, is sure to be overshadowed by ongoing disagreements within the guild over a possible actors' strike.

Earlier this month the union announced plans to send strike authorisation ballots to its members on 2 January.

But some high-profile members - among them Tom Hanks, Dame Helen Mirren and supporting actor nominee Josh Brolin - have questioned the validity of this hard-ball strategy.
