British talent up for Euro awards

James McAvoy and Kristin Scott Thomas are among the British stars nominated for this year's European Film Awards.

McAvoy gets a nod for best European actor for his work in Atonement, as does Michael Fassbender for playing IRA hunger striker Bobby Sands in Hunger.

Scott Thomas is shortlisted in the best European actress category for her role in the French-language drama I've Loved You So Long.

The 21st European Film Awards are held in Copenhagen, Denmark on 6 December.

Last year's event, held in Berlin, saw Dame Helen Mirren named best actress for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II in The Queen.

Controversial

Mike Leigh's comedy Happy Go Lucky is one of six titles shortlisted for best film, receiving an additional nomination for lead actress Sally Hawkins.

Dame Judi can currently be seen in James Bond film Quantum of Solace

Turner Prize-winning artist Steve McQueen is recognised for directing Hunger, as is The Class director Laurent Cantet.

As previously announced Dame Judi Dench will receive a lifetime achievement award at the ceremony, to be hosted by Danish TV host Mikael Bertelsen.

This year's awards will also recognise S�ren Kragh-Jacobsen, Kristian Levring, Lars von Trier and Thomas Vinterberg, the Danish filmmakers behind the influential Dogme movement.

McAvoy was nominated for European Film Award last year for his work in Idi Amin drama The Last King of Scotland.

Kristin Scott Thomas can currently to be seen in UK cinemas in the Noel Coward adaptation Easy Virtue.
