| Wednesday, 31 May, 2000, 14:19 GMT 15:19 UK All Saints movie flops ![]() The girls get tough in a scene from Honest The film debut of three members of the group All Saints is being pulled from many cinemas across the UK after a poor showing at the box office. The hugely-hyped Honest, which took its bow at the Cannes Film Festival, has received scathing reviews since it opened. In its first weekend, the directorial debut from Eurythmics star Dave Stewart pulled in just 111,309, despite generating a blaze of publicity at a star-studded premire in London last week.
By contrast, Hollywood blockbuster Gladiator took around 3m over the same period, despite being in its third week of release. Dropped As a result, Honest has been dropped completely by the UCI cinema chain, while its competitors have radically reduced the number of screens it is being shown at. After opening at 220 cinemas on Friday, the movie looks set to be shown at just 60 in its second week. The black comedy, which stars Nicole and Natalie Appleton and fellow group member Melanie Blatt, entered the box office chart at number 12.
Set in the late 1960s, it features the trio as three sisters who turn to crime. Censors gave the movie an 18 certificate because of scenes containing violence, nudity and drug use, which has prevented many of the group's young fan base from seeing it. Eurythmics star Dave Stewart, making his directorial debut, slammed critics for panning Honest, but it appears his words have fallen on deaf ears. All Saints - whose fourth member Shaznay Lewis chose not to appear in the film - topped the UK music charts earlier this year with their single Pure Shores from the film The Beach. |
