EastEnders star Michael Greco, who plays Beppe Di Marco in the BBC soap, was a new entry at number three in the annual list.

He surprisingly got the nod ahead of fellow-actor and man-of-the-moment Jude Law, who had to be content with fourth place.

Another newcomer in this year's poll included Naked Chef Jamie Oliver at number five - proving perhaps that the way to a woman's heart, like a man's, is through her stomach.

Oliver was the only entry in the top 10 who was not an actor or a pop star - although he hopes to taste success shortly with his band Scarlet Division.

British talent

The magazine compiled the list from the votes of 5,000 readers, but it was not good news for everyone.

Prime Minister Tony Blair will have to content himself with looking after his new baby after dropping out of this year's top 100 and it was also goodbye to actor Jack Nicholson and The Earl of Wessex, Prince Edward.

The flag was kept flying Edward's nephew by Prince William, who jumped 10 places to number 12 - the highest placing ever for a member of the Royal Family.

Sean Connery, 69, struck a blow for the more mature man, weighing at number 22 - ahead of Leonardo Di Caprio.

England and Manchester United footballer David Beckham surprisingly failed to make the top 10, but all in all it was a good result for the Brits.

Company editor Sam Baker said: "You can say what you like about British men, but with four out of the top five being Brits, Company readers obviously think we've got more than our fair share of talent right here at home."
